To develop students ability to provide feedback and feedforward in the area of writing through the use of google docs.
What do my students need to learn?
For students to be able to identify what makes a great piece of writing and how a piece of writing can be improved. This will require students to:
- Understand the writing process - in particular recrafting.
- Know what makes a good piece of writing - eg: Strong vocabulary, specific detail.
- Recognise what is missing from a piece of writing - eg: detail, paragraphs.
- Communicate their ideas clearly - "What am I trying to say?" Giving feedback/feedforward to a buddy.
Why?
- Students struggle to recraft their writing - even when they know that there are things missing and that it could be better.
- Students do not engage in meaningful conversations about their writing with their peers.
- If students know what makes a good piece of writing and can critique their own and others writing - this should enable them to complete focussed recrafting and therefore improve as writers.
Goals for the inquiry:
- Students to set goals for their writing
- Students to understand what makes a good piece of writing and be able to identify this in their own and others' writing.
Great inquiry Kristen! I understand why you have selected this as a learning need. I have always found it challenging to get children to take the time to meaningfully recraft their writing. I am looking forward to seeing how the use of Google Docs could support this learning.
